Fourth Bp pro Mid Length Surfboard
Who should ride this shape? The surfer who wants to bridge the gap between their shortboard and a mid-length.
HIGH
After years of surfing (and loving) the
Fourth bp mini mid length surfboard, I realised that the bp mini had made me a better surfer. Now, this does a few things for me, firstly it makes me want to grab a shortboard again. It also makes me want to surf all the time….. This isn’t always a good combo for progression for me as I tend to go out in less than average waves on my shortboard and suffer bad wave count and silly mistakes as I struggle to maintain speed. So tail between the legs I can go back to my bp mini and build my confidence again.
PERFORMANCE
Following this pattern a few times brought me to the bp pro mid length template template. I tried going shorter in the bp mini and it just didn’t feel any more rippable. If anything it lost its responsiveness and felt a little dull. So I refined the bp mini further towards a shortboard.
MID LENGTH
More rocker, less width, more hip, less foam, more drive, less rail length. Now I truly believe i have one of the best all rounders ive ever surfed. It catches waves amazingly, turns in the pocket like my shortboard and knifes the face when i get the speed for a turn.
Mid lengths taught me a lot about my surfing and board design for average everyday surfers like myself. We may not light it up on every wave but it’s in there somewhere with the right board under our feet. The Fourth bp pro mid length surfboard is gunna bring it out more often than not.
The Design details of the Fourth Bp Pro Mid Length Surfboard
We have to start with the bp mini. – I have pulled the nose in, taken the over all width of the design down, and increased the hip pivot by decreasing the tail base aswell. This is what gives you that same but different outline the bp family share.
The rockers are increased in height and curve to allow for more turning radius on the shorter rail line and for generally more aggressive surfing. The foil is also shaved down further with a decrease in volume from the deck and rails. The fin set up is also clustered slightly to free the tail up. Given the added sensitivities introduced the fin set up really shouts out to be thruster only as I wanted to concentrate this board for off the tail surfing as its core use.
How to size this board
You want 4-5 inches longer than your standard shortboard and around 3.5 -5 litres more foam. or 4 inches shorter than your bp mini and around 5 litres less foam.
This Mid Length Surfboard should be ridden as a thruster only. Using the
