The Unstopable Rise Of The Love Machine 6’9 FM

Love Machine 6’9 FM: The Mid-Length That Cracked the UK Code
Some boards sneak into the line-up quietly. Others arrive with a splash. The Love Machine 6’9 FM has done both. In just a short time, it’s become one of the most recognisable—and best-selling—boards in the UK, and for good reason.
First and foremost, it’s important to note that this article focuses on the 6’9 size specifically. The Love Machine FM range is a bit different, in that it does not just take a single model and scale it for size. Instead, Ryan Lovelace, the shaper behind Love Machine Surfboards, scans his favourite shaped surfboard for each size in the FM range. Each board therefore has been hand-shaped for different customers, and each has its own dimensions and features. Whilst they all share Love Machine FM DNA, it is surprising how varied they are in character.
All the FM boards sell well, the 6’9 however has been by far and away the standout performer. What is it about this particular model in this size that make it a surfing and commercial winner?
The Perfect fit for UK Waves
UK surfing is a mixed bag: waist-high slop one week, head-high and hollow the next, then back to onshore mush, in fact you can get all the full range in a single surf. The FM doesn’t mind. It’s happy in thigh-high slop, steady in chest-high peaks, and more than capable when the surf gets punchy. In other words, it thrives in the 90% of conditions we actually surf, not just the 10% we dream about. So what are the design features that make it such a capable UK all-rounder.
Firstly; its a mid-length, which means plenty of paddle power and easy wave catching whether its small or bigger.
Secondly; its an eggy shape, which means loads of curve in the outline, especially in the back half which means easy turning and drawing lines on the wave face.
Thirdly; it has a round squash tail, which gives a bit more speed and release than your classic pulled in rounded tail. For UK conditions that little addition makes for a more entertaining surf without losing much in the way of control or hold.
Fourthly; the Twinzer fin set up perfectly complements the boards desire to be fast and loose like a twin fin should, whilst still providing enough control to make that performance accessible to the average surfer.
Fifthly; the bottom contours combine vee, concave, a pulled in rail edge, and an elegant release channel off the tail for extra looseness and friction free surfing. The combination gives plenty of speed, and smoothness through chop, whilst facilitating really easy rail to rail transitions. This, plus the curve and rocker, make the 6’9 FM one of the easiest handling mid-lengths on the market. One of the constant bit of feedbacks we get on this board is it makes people feel like better surfers through the ease with which it facilitates the basic manoeuvres of surfing.
Sixthly; as already eluded to, the rocker is perfectly judged so that it is flat enough to easily catch waves and trim through flat section, but more than enough to facilitate really engaging on rail surfing, as well as forgiving late drop ins.
Lastly; but not leastly (?), as standard all FMs are spec’d with a slightly heavier glass job. This not only improves the boards durability, but also aids in the really smooth, trim heavy surfing style the FM’s are famous for.
When you combine all of the features above, you have one of the most capable, and easiest surfing mid lengths that anybody from lower intermediate and above can grab, and enjoy themselves on the vast majority of UK waves.
Dialled to the Everyday Surfer
Speaking of who can get the most from the 6’9 FM, its easy usability makes it a good fit for the largest board buying demographic within the UK. Namely lower intermediate surfers in their 30s, 40s, even 50s, juggling work, family, and other commitments whilst steeling surfs at the weekend a few times a month. In that respect for surfers who might be a little rusty, don’t have the endless physicality of being in their 20’s, or who simply don’t want to fight every session, mid-lengths are a godsend. They paddle easy, forgive mistakes, and keep the stoke alive. The FM leans into that role beautifully—accessible without being dull, an encouraging companion that leaves you feeling better about your surfing abilities even if your not in the water that often.
Looks Without Alienation
So why this board, when the mid-length market is so busy with plenty of other boards ticking similar boxes?
The answer lies in its looks. The FM manages to look modern, fresh, and exciting while avoiding the trap of being too “out there” for the average buyer. The rails, outline, details, and finish all whisper refinement, without shouting exclusivity. It’s a board you want to pull off the rack, tuck under your arm, and imagine how good you are going to surf and look on it.
That subtle but original and aesthetically pleasing style also sparked the curiosity of the main UK surf shops. The FM didn’t just sit on boutique racks; it landed in all the major retail outlets. That visibility means it’s right there, front and centre, and accessible when the casual surfer goes board shopping. That accessibility to the customer cannot be underestimated in the rise of the 6’9 FM and is a glowing endorsement for the benefits of being really, really, ridiculously good looking.
The Magic Recipe
All things considered there is not standout feature that makes the 6’9 FM such a success, more a rare combination and balance of the things that matter:
Thanks to its functionality It works in the majority of waves you’ll surf in the UK.
It suits the age, ability, and frequency of the country’s biggest surfboard buying demographic.
Looks good and original enough to feel new, sparking curiosity and desire, without scaring off the mainstream.
Its easily accessible across the land.
Put it all together, and you’ve got the formula for a bestseller.
